Car model and year: Porsche 997
Purpose: to read coolant temp
Old BMW code scanner reviews:
1. Foxwell NT301 scanner
I used on my old BMW will look at generic codes on the 997 but it won’t read coolant temp as live data.
2. foxwell nt530 scanner
Download Foxwell nt530 scanner Porsche function list

2. ELM327 based Bluetooth ones
Review 1. One thing being suggested is the cheaper elm327 Bluetooth modules on eBay are clones that many have poor build/connections that fail, pid data that won’t work or worse the unit won’t connect to your car at all.
Review 2. As it happens I bought a cheap Wi-fi ELM327 from obd2shop.co.uk last week (I have an iPhone so need Wi-fi for IOS rather than Bluetooth) just to see if there were any error codes I was unaware of having recently bought the car.
I downloaded a free app called Car Scanner and it connected first time, shows revs, coolant temp, speed, live data from sensors, DTC codes and a lot more. I was quite impressed for a free app & a unit that works for under a tenner.
3. I have a Vgate icar 3 I use with IOS. It’s likely to be fine on Android.
4. I use Durametric for that. I looked like basic data and fault clearing when I used it last.
Provides in-depth troubleshooting and has great model coverage. It can work with all of the systems in the car: DME, Airbag, ABS, Tiptronic, Alarm, Seat Memory, Heating & A/C and more.
5. I have the PLX KiWi3 Bluetooth adaptor which is a nice compact widget which I got for $59 IIRC when the original kickstarter campaign was running (they are spendier now). That said: I’ve only actually used it for checking and clearing fault codes on my BMW with the OBDCarDoctor IOS app, though it is listed as compatible with a range of IOS and android apps including Torque, Harry’s Lap Timer, DashCommand and several others.

How does piwis tester 3 work?
It is a hardware and software tool that plugs into your Windows PC’s USB port. Once plugged into the car the software is capable of reading and resetting the different modules in the car.
PIWIS 3 tester is too expensive and not easy to use. You most likely won’t be able to get a hold of Porsche Piwis unless you are an auto repair shop.
If you are looking for one easy-to-use dedicated diagnostic and service reset tool for Porsche, you will get one foxwell nt530 scanner.
If you are working in one Porsche auto repair shop, and you need in-depth diagnostic & engineering programming coding tool, you will need Porsche piwis 3 tester.
ELM327 Wifi /Bluetooth, Vgate icar 3, PLX KiWi3 Bluetooth adaptor are little OBD2 code scanner without in-depth programming function.
Durametric is also one OBD2 code scanner for Porsche without engineering software, it is cheaper than PIWIS 3 tester.
